The wood of Pterocarpus santalinus is extremely hard and resistant to termites. It was used for houses posts, agricultural implements and for carving.

The wood yields a dye, the santalin. The dye is used for calico printings, for staining wood, for dyeing leather in red and cloth in pink. (Dastur, 2006, Useful Plants of India and Pakistan)
